Album Review 1: Caitlin Canty - Reckless Skyline

I was sent Caitlin Canty “Reckless Skyline” to review after my daughter had just got out of the hospital and driving around in the Midwest on a snowy Tuesday in January was really a breath of fresh air after all the stress from the past couple of days. Listening to Caitlin Canty sing and looking out the window at the snow brings me back to early Sheryl Crow albums and old Stevie Nicks solo work. I don’t really like comparing new artist to old artist but sometimes you get that feeling of influences after first listen. I really love Caitlin vocals on the song “True” and the guitar work on that song is really fantastic after jamming that loud on my radio.
I am
really enjoying the bass line during the song “One Man” and that driving bass
line has me grooving in my chair as I write this review, bobbing my head up and
down as I pluck away at the keys below.
“My Love For You Will Not Fade” is a beautiful song with a dark hint of
love and affection and listening to that track has me wanting to hear more and
more of this album.
Vocally
Caitlin has a great rang in her voice on the song “Wore Your Ring” and “My Baby
Don’t Care” and the dark blues riffs and heartbreak really stand out to me on
those two songs. She is so soulful
when she sings and the low range in her voice would have my jaw-dropping saying,
“Wow” if she ever would come locally and seeing her live. I hope she comes to Columbus, Ohio in the
near future so I can see her live down the road.
Justin
Pizzoferrato does a glorious job mixing the soulful voice throughout the entire
album of “Reckless Skyline” and looking at his past work with J Mascis, Chelsea
Light Moving and the Pixies has me wanting to hear more albums that were mixed
by him. He does a fantastic job mixing
the bluesy, soulful voice of Caitlin and working with him must having been a
really great dream of hers.
One of
my favorite artists of all time is Neil Young and the song “Unknown Legend” is a
fantastic take on one of my favorite artist of all time. I think Neil Young would be very proud of what
she has done with that song making it a very dreamy, simple, beautiful
song.
Overall
the sound of this album is really really good to my ear. The WAV files sound great coming out of my
stereo and Jeffrey Foucault produced with great detail in every note that was
sung throughout the record. I really love the feel to this album and I
look forward to hearing much more from Caitlin Canty in the near future. The album is really really fantastic and I
recommend this album to anyone that I looking for a great winter album to drive
around too during the harsh winters in the Midwest.
